Turn On Yer Fleshy Spoons

Recorded on 21.8.90. We drooled and dribbled as we turned on yer fleshy spoons. "You can't do that", you said, "do it again".

Mad Opera

And once again we brought the madness to The Adelphi Club in Hull. The owner Paul Jackson should be given credit for always giving us a gig when we asked him for one. I was banned from there on at least three occasions for being a drunken lunatic but always got back in. Recorded live on 17.8.90.

Blue Creek

A forty odd minute completely mental version of Captain Beefhearts' Electricity I hear you ask. Certainly Sir, that will do nicely. Electrickery indeed. Recorded on 14.8.90. There is nothing else I can say or would possibly want to say about this, just listen and believe.

Heavy Petting

Mean To Me was improvised out of thin air, well the air must have been pretty thick for it to come out but it did. Trevs' Dad was doing some work outside and he needed to come in to get water but we told him that if we were playing that he must not interrupt us. He waited until the last note of Mean To Me had only just died down and came rushing in and was not best pleased so thanks to him after all these years that he waited. Recorded on 7.8.90. Trev and I did not swap guitar and bass on this rehearsal so this is pure for sure. Mr. Rudeforth used a lot of stuff by the evangelist Billy Graham, we thought of it as turning the shit around and throwing it back in their faces. Mr. R. was asked at least once if we were a Christian band though, ha ha.

Naked Throat Rhythm

I'm not sure now after all these years how it happened but we started doing a version of Electricity by Captain Beefheart And The Magic Band that if anything was more manic than Beefhearts version. No mean feat I think you will agree. We were always into jazz in a big way and here are a couple of mess arounds with the chords to I Got Rhythm which Charlie Parker among many others based a few of his tunes on. This was resorded on 24.7.90.

Biblical Sex

This rehearsal was recorded on 3.7.90. New Death Of The Original Mares' Foal is part of New Original Mares' Lemon which cuts off and goes into a version of The Death of M.F. which is quite possibly the last time we played it and certainly the only time we did it like this.

Hot Air Assassination

This was recorded on 19.6.90 in the back room at Trevs' house where we did most of our rehearsals under a curfew from the neighbours Len and May who were reasonably pleasant to our faces and told the neighbours how crap and noisy we were behind our backs. I started to play my acoustic guitar through an amp and cry baby wah wah pedal which added a nice new dimension to the sound. The great thing about the improvisations is that I don't try to sing (in the biblical sense).

Wobbly Bob

I'm not sure what happened to this tape but there is something distinctly wobbly about the sound. I have included it despite the faults in sound quality because I want to feature as much of Grants' drumming as I possibly can. As usual he plays like a demon. Recorded live at The Adelphi Club in Hull on 5.6.90.

He Forgives Her

I had a really pleasant suprise when I started remastering the tapes from this version of the band after not hearing them for 20 years. I knew it would be good but didn't expect the quality of performance that I proudly present for your edification. The songs sung and the improvisations swung and stung. Recorded on 15.5.90.

Long Time Gone

Recorded at The Adelphi Club in Hull on 22.4.90. This was the first gig with the new line-up, well a fragment of it anyway. The first two tunes are from the soundcheck. Notice the difference between the first version of Long Time Gone recorded at the soundcheck and the second one from the gig, the quality is not as good on the one from the gig but I included it because it fucking rocks! Here Grant shows why I used to rate him as one of the best drummers in the world.

Dropped A Clanger

I was really pissed off about Nick leaving because that line-up acheived the most success we had ever had and I felt there was a lot of potential there but once I got over it I just carried on as I always did. It turned out that in the grand scheme of things What Katy Did Next went up to a completely different level. I'm not sure what happened in the time between the last recording and this but something obviously did. This line-up created some of the best stuff in the history of WKDN. For a few months Trev and I swapped between bass and guitar on a couple of tunes and this added yet another dimension to things. I played bass on Long Time Gone. Recorded on 21.4.90.
